Peanut Shuffle Club – quartet
Our Sunday band! Bristol-bred swing – that sweet early jazz, designed to dance to.
Led by the female vocals of Elly Hopkins and spirited gypsy guitar of Jay Singh, Peanut Shuffle Club breathe their own exuberant energy into hits from the 20s, 30s and 40s – moving to the rhythm of the streets of New Orleans,
Hard times swing tunes to fill your heart with gladness and your boots with dances!
After their stellar performance on our first edition, we are delighted to welcome the triumphant return of local heroes Paper Moon aboard for the Friday night. Formed in Bristol in 2011 from a love of all things swing and led from the front by jazz singer Lucy Moon; Paper Moon is a swinging, vintage-inspired outfit bursting with energetic swing, effortless repartee and classic tunes from the swing era and beyond.
Lucy and the band have extensive experience of playing for dancers and understand what it takes to get fingers snapping and feet flying; not content with just being behind the microphone, Lucy also cuts a mean rug herself.
Over the last 6 years, Paper Moon have played in dance venues, festivals and jazz clubs all over the South of England and Wales and continue to delight all who dance in their path.
The quartet of two guitars, violin and double bass conjure up the mood of 1930s Paris, fused with the energy of a campfire jam session.
From Glastonbury Festival to neighbourhood bars, from Arts Centres to street corners, The Schmoozenbergs have enjoyed showcasing their skills far and wide since forming in 2012 and their gigs in Bristol always attract an eager crowd of dancers.
Their Django Reinhardt inspired hot jazz provide the ideal setting to get your feet high on Bal, we couldn’t imagine having a Balboa exchange in Bristol without them!
A key figure in Cardiff’s dance scene, Anna brought an individual and classic swing sound to her hometown. As well as DJing for Lindy Hop Cardiff’s classes and socials she’s a familiar face this side of the bridge, regularly playing in Bristol for our socials and festivals (BSF, NYSAB) and even further afield at such events as Birmingham Stomp Stomp and Swingamajig. We’re lucky to have snagged her for our little event!
Anna is passionate about early swing music and is a dab hand at musicality and sensitivity when reading the vibe on the dance floor – she really knows how to keep the room dancing all night long!
Hailing from the seething metropolis that is London, Sarah Spoon, AKA DJ Cardigan, has an eclectic taste that is much in demand at Balboa, Blues and Lindy Hop events alike.
When it comes to Balboa, she has a leaning towards frenetically paced dirty New Orleans jazz, but also revels in the big band classics from the heart of the swing era, not to mention an assortment of gems outside the genre. What it comes down to though, is that she’s a sucker for a grooving beat and a strong melody.
Cat the Hat
Catherine (aka Cat the Hat) is a regular DJ at Oxford’s monthly balboa social, Last Stop Balboa. She also plays for Balboa Monday’s charity dances in Reading and All Jazzed Up’s Henley extravaganzas. When she gets low she gets high by playing a heady mix of tracks from the original swing era and modern swing greats. Most of all she is hugely excited to being playing on a floating dancefloor in glorious Bristol!
